About this book

Overview

Diseases of the lungs remain a major cause of illness, disability, hospitalisation, and mortality worldwide. They may result from infections, inflammatory disorders, environmental and occupational exposures, structural abnormalities, systemic diseases, or malignancies. Because many pulmonary conditions share similar symptoms and radiological features, accurate diagnosis requires careful correlation of clinical findings with microbiology, pathology, radiology, and oncology.
The Lung Disease Compendium: Infection, Pathology, and Oncology has been developed as an accessible and multidisciplinary academic resource. It brings together important concepts related to pulmonary infections, diagnostic microbiology, pathological processes, radiological evaluation, histopathological diagnosis, thoracic malignancies, and clinicopathological correlation.
The book emphasises how different diagnostic disciplines complement one another. Microbiological, radiological, histopathological, molecular, and clinical findings become more meaningful when interpreted together within the overall context of the patient.
This compendium is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, residents, clinicians, pathologists, microbiologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, oncologists, researchers, laboratory professionals, and other members of the healthcare team. The content has been presented in a structured and reader-friendly manner to support learning, revision, teaching, and professional reference.
The book also acknowledges the rapidly evolving nature of respiratory medicine, including advances in molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial-resistance detection, imaging, digital pathology, tumour classification, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and personalised medicine.
We hope this book encourages critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based decision-making, and a deeper understanding of pulmonary infection, pathology, imaging, and oncology. We sincerely acknowledge our teachers, mentors, colleagues, institutions, healthcare professionals, patients, and families whose guidance and experiences have contributed to this work.
We welcome constructive suggestions from readers for improving future editions.
